Meet the Members of the Quintet
 |
Jason Kirke,
trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet –
Jason is currently a Certified Financial Planner™ professional with Financial Partners Group,
an independent financial advisory firm in West Des Moines. While obtaining a BME at the UNI
School of Music in Cedar Falls, IA, he studied trumpet under the direction of Randy Grabowski
and played in the Wind Symphony and Jazz Band One; which recorded Requiem (1996) and
Conversations (1997), respectively. He currently plays principal trumpet in the Central Iowa
Symphony. He continues to serve as a substitute for the following ensembles: Fort Dodge Area
Symphony, Karl King Band, CJC Big Band, Resurrection Swing Band and the Ames Municipal Band.
He has played with various theater groups and is often requested to play special music for
weddings and churches as a soloist. |
| Matthew Gaunitz, trumpet,
flugelhorn, and piccolo trumpet – Matt is our newest member, taking the place of our good
friend Larry Hansen who retired from CIBQ in October 2011. Matt has recently finished a BM in
trumpet performance from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, Matt was principal trumpet
with the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, the ISU Brass Quintet, and was associate lead trumpet with
Jazz 1. Apart from university ensembles, Matt has played lead trumpet in several musicals
including: Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Damn Yankee’s. He has
played numerous weddings and church services, and is currently substitute trumpet with the Des
Moines Symphony and the Des Moines Metro Opera. Matt’s principal teachers include Michael Sachs,
Charles Lazarus, Bob Dorer, and Jim Bovinette. |

Pamela Schwab,
horn – Pam is
principal partner and chief engineer for Civil Software Design, LLC, and holds a Master
of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Kentucky.
Pam is principal horn with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra. She studied
at the UMKC Conservatory of Music, and the University of Kansas. She has
played with the Collegiate Brass, Fort Dodge Symphony Orchestra, Ames
Municipal Band, Central College Wind Ensemble and numerous other
orchestras, bands and ensembles in central Iowa. |
| Pat McFarland, trombone & euphonium
– Pat works for the Plant Engineering
group at the 3M plant in Ames designing & maintaining control systems. He is
the principal trombonist with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra as well as
the founding member of the trombone quartet, Nevadian Brass. Pat also plays
euphonium with the Back Row Boys tuba/euphonium ensemble and trombone with the
Nevada First United Methodist Church Praise Band, Ames Municipal Band, and the
Boone Big Band. He has also played with the Ames First Evangelical Free Church
Praise Band, ACTORS, Nevada Fine Arts, the Don Hoy Orchestra, the Roy White Big
Band, the Des Moines Symphony, the Des Moines Big Band, the Civic Center of
Greater Des Moines backup band, the CJC Big Band in Des Moines, Resurrected Swing
Band, the Des Moines Opera, and the Variety Club of Iowa Telethon broadcast band. |

Jim Kilmer, tuba – Jim is the Postmaster for the city of Nevada. He
plays tuba in the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Marshalltown
Community Band, and the Back Row Boys tuba/euphonium ensemble. Jim has
also played with the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, the Karl King Band of
Fort Dodge, and with the Ames Municipal Band. |
